Oberlin College (& Conservatory) is a selective private liberal arts college in Oberlin, which is a city in Lorain County, in the US state of Ohio, with a population estimated at a number of more than 8000 inhabitants, at the time of the 2000 census.
The college was established in September, 1833, as Oberlin Collegiate Institute, by Rev. John Jay Shipherd and Philo Penfield Stewart, and it is known for having more alumni who earn PhDs than any other liberal arts college in the nation. Through the College of Arts and Sciences, it offers its students 47 majors, and, through the Conservatory of Music, established in 1865, 8 majors and private study in 20 areas.
Oberlin's athletic teams are known as the Yeomen and Yeowomen, and they compete in North Coast Athletic Conference, Division III, with 22 varsity teams. The official school colors are cardinal red and mikado yellow.
